I have no way to express what I think or feel right now. After the second mile the aid stations were all out of gatorade and most were out of water. At about mile 15 we were diverted back to Grant Park and the race was called off. Estimates from the Chicago Tribune say that of the 36,000 who started the race, only 4,000 finished the full distance. (However, they say that anyone who passed the half by noon got to finish the full, and I passed the half by 11:30, so who knows how accurate anything else they say is?) I still got my medal, which I need to get engraved with an asterix in the time section, and I want to make a t-shirt that says I Survived the Chicago Death Race '07. I felt pretty good around mile 16 and I think I could have finished, but it was brutal out there, and I blame the race managers for screwing up what is supposed to be on of the best races in the world. Yes, the weather was awful, but with adequate hydration that can be overcome. But they didn't offer that. I want to try it again, but I'm going to take a year break to see if they mess it up again next year before committing to another.
So I did pretty well in spite of the weather, I am pretty damn cool, and the race planner suck. I will probably talk more about the good things of the race, later, but I've got to hop into an ice bath if I'm going to be functional for my party tonight.
